A bird in the hand is worth a bummed-out day

This is, unfortunately, an ex-sparrow. (Update: It's not a sparrow. It's a rose-breasted grosbeak -- a young male that hasn't gotten his strikingly beautiful adult plumage yet -- passing through on his way to Central or South America.)
Yesterday morning while having breakfast, there was a bird ruckus in the yard, and everyone scattered. I figure a hawk must have come by. This bird flew right into my door in a panic, then fell to the ground. I think I saw little stars circling over its head.
I hoped the bird was just stunned and would get up soon and fly away, but it didn't. So I put a towel in a shoebox and placed the bird inside. Hours went by, and the bird remained completely still.
THIS TOTALLY BUMMED ME OUT!
(Not to mention this is the second day in a row that something has died at my house.)
Birds shouldn't fly hundreds or even thousands of miles to Florida for the winter only to slam into something and meet their maker.
But I suppose it happens all the time.
The bird's buddies had better be careful....

Poor little guy.
Oh yeah, this would have totally bummed me too! Seriously, if I step on a worm I feel bad! Oy.
remind me that i am busy if you ever invite me to your house!!
poor little thing. he looks like he had a nice, happy, long bird life.
I used to work at a restaurant that had huge picture windows. Pretty much every day a bird, usually pigeon, would attempt to fly through them and break their little necks. It was always so sad to pick up their little bird bodies.
Aww, that's terrible. At our old house we were surrounded by woods and birds would hit our windows all the time. I've helped quite a few get upright and chill out a while. It is so sad when they don't get back up and fly away. Hope tomorrow is more quiet for you.
Poor little thing. I know it happens all the time, but it is still something that would make nearly anyone bummed out if they were to personally experience it. :(
Oh, that sucks.
Oh geez! That is awful. I'm so sorry Holly. This would have made me incredibly sad, too.

I was just at Wal-Greens and I seen a poor baby bird that couldn't fly.. I was so very sad. I laid some french fries in front of him.. but he was uninterested..ugh.
