In which I compare Sesame Street Live to outer space

Today, I took my son to the Broward Center for Performing Arts to see Sesame Street Live: When Elmo Grows Up. The Man-cub has never seen a live show like this.
And there's a good reason.
I thought he might be too young to go to a theater performance, even Sesame Street. I think he did really well, but the steps were such a big temptation for him. (And we got the cheap seats waaaaay up in the balcony, so there were a lot of steps.) The bags of cotton candy at his eye level were a temptation. (We didn't buy any, but not for his lack of trying or the seller's lack of rolling his eyes when we didn't.) The backs of the seats in front of us were a temptation. Everything was something he'd never seen before, so it was kind of like going to another planet. Without the spacesuit and lifeline and headset that allows you to talk to Mission Control.
The Man-cub did settle down for one portion of the show, however:

Ah, Elmo. Terra Firma. Mother Earth.
Taking my son to see the show was a good learning experience for both of us (except for my dealing with the parking garage Nazi who preferred yelling at me and making me feel bad for not understanding a sign, over just giving me a ticket).
But what I want to know is, shouldn't treating your child to a fun outing create a nice deposit in the good behavior bank? Taking the Man-cub to see Sesame Street should have equaled at least two peaceful days of happiness and sunshine. At least! Instead, he threw a large piece of chicken at my husband at lunchtime and then squirmed on the floor. Ah well. Maybe that's part of the adjustment after coming back from a trip to outer space.

gotta love the big red guy!
Every kid loves Elmo. I just don't get it. My son has a growing obsession with the annoying little monster.
I have been feeling guilty I haven't bought tix for my kids. But this is a good reminder that they can see Sesame Street at home and kick seats and run around here as much as they want. Still you rock for taking him, I was really so close to going.
I hear you on the good behavior bank system's flaws! Maybe we need a behavior bailout package??
LOVE the comparison. Great post and sorry it didn't work out for you on the good behavior side. Bummer that it doesn't work that way.
It's hard to pay attention when there's SO much going on!
Going to a show for the first time is just so overwhelming to kids. There are so many items for them to check out. The first time we took our oldest to a show he was quite a terror afterward thanks to being overtired and having so many thoughts going through his little mind. Each show since that has been amazing. He loves shows and looks forward to seeing more. We have been debating Sesame Street live when it comes back here in February (so we can slip on ice and park in snow banks). Of course is Sesame Street still of interest for a 5 year old and do we attempt to take the almost 2 year old (16 months old now).
Of all of the kids shows we have gone to Sesame Street Live has been the best. The best bang for your buck and something to keep the kids and adults happy. I hope you give it another try down the road and things go smoothly.
My dog is like my toddler and I'm really glad I'm not allowed to take her everywhere with me and that she could care less about Elmo - unless of course he were feeding her treats, then he would be her fav :~)
There's a good behavior bank?? No way!
First theater experiences are always a learning experience. My kids were super young when they went to live theater and have gone many times since. And let's face it, they are STILL tempted by the stairs!!! :)
And what IS it with Elmo???
I've always been scared of people in costumes, so my first time at Sesame Street Live was a nightmare! My parents were smart after that and would get us cheap tickets...where the characters didn't come out into the audience.
Doesn't always seem like we jump through millions of hoops to take them to something they will enjoy and it ends up being more work for us (before, during & after)? We love it though, right?
What fun and experience for the man-cub! hehe Was it entertaining at least"?
The parking garage guy sounds like a but head!
