Here's to the under-awarded

Usually I don't post on the weekends, but I'm too excited to hear about who will win the Nickelodeon Parents Connect Parents Picks Awards for best parenting blog in Miami -- because I was a nominee. And Monday is the day they announce the winners. If you voted for me, I thank you from the bottom of my trans-fat-filled heart. Whichever of the nominees wins, I just want to repeat I am so happy to even have been nominated. And the review they wrote of my blog couldn't have been kinder (even if the map says I live in St. Petersburg.) (I got nothing against St. Petersburg.) (But still.):

"And while we're not brave enough to photograph and post the contents of our purse for all to judge, as Holly does in Don't Let This Happen to You, we're happy to know that somewhere in South Florida there's a blogging mom who's fearless enough to prove that Clinique lipstick and Matchbox cars really can happily co-exist. "

Who doesn't love to win something? Especially an award for something you enjoy doing? As a parent and a blogger, I don't think there are enough awards out there for either parenting or blogging. I mean, you can give Meryl Streep and Sean Penn all the statuettes and accolades for acting, and that's fine, except the entertainment industry pats itself on the back waaaaaay more than blogging does. Where are the awards for the person who does the hard work of being stuck at home for weeks with sick children while the in-laws are visiting and there's that one neighbor kid who thinks he lives at your house but your boss wants you to finish a project so you were distracted and accidentally singed your eyebrows while heating up macaroni and you're trying to find something funny or touching about it to say on the Internet? It ain't easy.

You see what I'm saying. I know you do.

So I'd like to offer up some humble awards each week. (I say each week, but in reality it might be more like whenever the planets align and both my children are not in need of me at the same time.) Unfortunately, the winners won't get a statuette. No cash. Not an embossed sticker or anything. Maybe in the future if this sticks, there might be some kind of button for your blog.

As if an award from me really means anything anyway.... Did you ever watch that old show, Whose Line Is It Anyway? The points don't mean anything.

Here are my picks for this week.

Lou at LouCeeL wins the Awesome Alliteration Award for the following sentence from his post about Microsoft's PC vs. Mac ads:

"Microsoft, I am flipping you the virtual flying fickle finger of fate."

I love it. And he knows what he's talking about.

Helene at I'm Living Proof that God Has a Sense of Humor wins the This Is Why I'm Crazy Award for her post about learning from what life -- or the kids -- dish out:

"Bella: Can you drop us off at school today, Mommy, instead of Daddy?

Me: I can't today but I'll drop you off tomorrow.

Bella: Is today tomorrow?

Me: No, today is today and tomorrow is tomorrow. Today is Tuesday, tomorrow is Wednesday.

Bella: So when was yesterday?

Me: Yesterday was Monday. Yesterday was the day before, today is the present day, and tomorrow is the next day.

Bella: So....if today isn't tomorrow then how will I know when Halloween is?

Me: WHAT?! Halloween? How did we end up on Halloween? Talk about random....

Bella: No, I'm not talking about random. I'm talking about Halloween...which is tomorrow or is it the next day, which was yesterday, right? Just tell me when the unicorns are gonna be here."

Now who can't relate to that?

Congratulations, Lou and Helene! You've just won a rather dubious award -- but an award nonetheless.

Award or no award for me, hope to see you back here on Monday!
