No special occasion

This is a comforter set my husband's parents gave me as a birthday gift several years ago. Like, oh, around 10 years ago.

Internets, it was the most luxurious bed covering I'd ever owned. And it still is.

It's so nice I had it drycleaned -- and I'm not a dryclean kind of girl.

So I put it on the bed only for special occasions, like when I knew people would be over for Christmas or a party and guests might possibly take a peek in the bedroom.

This week, though, I'd had it with the worn-out, faded, threadbare and slightly smelly old comforter that's been on the bed for a dozen years whose batting is bunched up at one end. I pulled the special-occasion comforter from its dryclean hanger in the back of the closet and put it on the bed. Instantly, the room felt happier. I felt happier.

(And as if the mama of a newborn didn't need any more reason to be invited to lie down in bed ....)

There's no reason to bring out the special-occasion comforter set. My son starts preschool at the end of the month? My husband recently gave me a netbook as a surprise? I lost three pounds this week? (Because I totally did!)

No -- but yes, I guess. Just that life is too short to save the good stuff for special occasions. Every ordinary, blah, nothing-going-on-here day is special enough. My special-occasion comforter is staying on the bed.

Do you share the same sickness save things for special occasions too? I say enjoy them now!

Life is a journey, not a destination (someone said that...and I believe it). I believe there will never be a more special occasion than today! I grew up around people who hoped the special occasion would come -- and I try to live carpe diem! Today is my special occasion. Enjoy all those things you have because, like you, when the comforter was on the bed -- it made you feel HAPPY! thanks for reminding me to start living the special occasions more often!

Every day (that you can catch a few winks) is a special day when you have a new baby. :)

What a great story. Yes, I do this a lot. I have items similar that I save just for me and on special occasions. Usually it involves chocolate. :-)

Well said. I actually don't have good stuff because I use everything as though it were everyday stuff. Which is good and bad, I suppose, because it wouldn't suck to have nice stuff to bring out for company, but then I would only get to enjoy it like three times a year. So, I guess I'll stick to sleeping on the good comforter.

I should bring out "the good stuff" more often. You've given me a good reminder today. Thanks.

Most things, I do not save for special occasions. I try to enjoy them as much as I can. Honestly though? I've never heard of a "special occasion comforter" before! Woman, use that every day! Enjoy it! Don't stick it in a closet.

Normally I use the special things I have, but there are some things I keep put away for the sole reason that we are a house full of klutzes who break things. Unfortunately, I can't stop my husband from using my hand- blown Mexican glass tumblers- I had a set of four and we're down to three! He even takes them to work!! It's not that I want to hoard things, I just want them to stay beautiful and, you know, in one piece!

Live today, for tomorrow is promised to no one. I heard that somewhere - and it's true.

Good for you! And I think it looks beautiful on your bed.

We usually don't save anything for special occasions. Other than liquor :) When we bought our dining table, they offered us the expensive pad cover and other bells and whistles. We always pass on things like that. No point in buying a nice table if you're just going to cover it up :)

That's it, I am leaving right now to get a new comforter set for my bed because ours is, well it's bad, I have dog and baby stains that never come out and I am tired of looking at it. I am blaming you of course, so my husband may be emailing later....just kidding. I will tell him we have had them for years and he just does not pay attention.
