Traditions

The idea of doing something traditional doesn't excite me. I like trying new things and shaking things up now and then.

Tradition conjures up tiresome hours polishing silver for a family dinner, then cleaning it and putting it back in a velvet-lined box. Tradition is doing things the way the Old Guard says because "that's the way we've always done it." Tradition is just going through the motions.

Or so I thought.

Even though my husband and I have been together a good while, because we waited to have children we are just now starting our own family traditions. Lazy Saturday mornings that shift into busy Saturday afternoons. Walks around the neighborhood at night. Sitting in our own places at the table for meals.

And my favorite, the quiet Sunday evening beach foray.

I hope when my boys are grown they will think of our traditions with fond memories -- while they start fresh with their own.

I remember the summers spent in the country - a family 'tradition' that died a long time ago but is still fresh in my memory. Unfortunately, such 'traditions' didn't exist for my sons - and now there's no way to go back and start things that they'll look back on as fondly as I look back on mine. And for that I am so sorry.

Well done, you. Thinking ahead for your kids is a really, really good thing to do. Not letting yourself get all tied up in the moment is good for all concerned - kids AND you.

I think we are just wired to develop "traditions" that are so meaningful and add to our lives. Your "traditions" sound very inviting especially to one from landlocked Oklahoma!

I know what ya mean about traditions.... you take a few from your childhood and then you make your own. They will do the same.

Traditions are organic -- they just seem to grow all on their own.

if I had a beach close by (other than the Great Salt Lake) I would have a beach tradition every night!

Family traditions are priceless. I'm sure your littles will love the memories that come from yours.

And your Sunday on the beach tradition sounds divine....bliss.
