Ice Cream Research Report

It's hard to believe, but my baby's first birthday is less than three months away.

That's right, my little Junebug is nine months old now. He's now been outside the womb a little longer than he was inside.

No, I didn't have an inside/outside party. But I am thinking about his birthday party.

All it took was seeing these cute ice cream truck printables at Etsy to make me think having an ice cream truck at the party would be so cute and fun. So brilliant me, I just thought, Let's have friends at a park with a playground, have an ice cream truck show up and maybe have a puppeteer come and do a show. That's something that babies, big kids and parents can all appreciate, and it's easy on me. And no one we know has done it.

Well.

Ice cream truck #1 wants $195, minimum. Ice cream truck #2 requests $350 for one hour.

And the puppeteer? $300.

I told my husband about my findings.

"You sure can pick 'em," he exclaimed.

I'm sure dollar signs and cha-ching sounds were going off in his head, because my husband -- keep in mind this is the man who said our children would be paternity tested based on how much they love chocolate ice cream -- promptly sent me the following e-mail.

In other words.... Ain't no way we're spending $7 per person on ice cream. Fancy mochi balls or not.

I wonder if kids would watch a show with crayon-colored homemade paper bag puppets set to old Van Halen mix tapes...?

Whoa! It was all sounding so cute until you pulled out the price tag! Kids would enjoy ice cream at the park without the truck though.
I can't believe he'll be one that soon! It's just not fair!!! They grow too darn fast.

I'm thinking you could buy $40 worth of ice cream throw it in a cooler, with a box painted to look like an ice cream truck around it and every kid there would be happier than a pig in slop.

The cost of a party, no matter how simple, is exhorbitant. It's insane.

An ice chest with a few tubs of ice cream, whipped cream, sundaes, and sprinkles - I'll bet the kids would love to make their own confections. And it's outside, so you can just hose down the mess. ;)

I love that your husband helped research. Yum, ice cream!

Inside outside party? Now I have heard everything! I totally did not go crazy for the first birthday because I thought it was nuts! I will wait to spend a lot of money on birthdays when she will remember it! But there is sure nothing like the first birthday!

I say do whatever you want to do because they're only little once. There were a million things I wanted to do while pregnant and I was always practical and now I regret it. If you can afford to do the things you want to - then do them and have a ball.

However, I've found that most parents (moms) plan parties more with their own expectations in mind (and those of the guests) than the kids'. You know kids would be happy with some wrapping paper a few toilet paper tubes and markers or crayons for entertainment and cake and ice cream for treats.

In reality, we'd never do just that but they really don't care what we do they just want to have some friends come over so they can play and eat goodies.

Have fun whatever you choose to do and take tons of pictures so I can virtually hug that cutie boy!

Oh, an ice cream truck is a GREAT idea. The price tag, not so much...

I don't think the kids care where the ice-cream comes from. Set them loose on a playground then feed them each a Drumstick and they will be happy campers. Let the ice-cream truck spend his afternoon circling the local neighborhoods, ain't no way they're raking in $350/hour. Scoundrels! Your baby is delicious. ;)
